HDC Young Chang obtained a patent.

HDC Young Chang obtained a patent for its technology to record live instruments on a smartphone.

The leading global musical instrument company, HDC Young Chang, has announced that it has obtained a patent for its “Smart Sound Recording” technology (also known as SSR), which records live performances by plugging a musical instrument directly into a smartphone.

The SSR is an original technology that enables you to easily record music by using a smartphone. Previously, it was difficult to get a high-quality audio recording because under the existing technology that records the digital piano sound coming from the speaker, ambient sounds or background noises such as key or pedal pressing sounds are captured as well. To avoid this, it was necessary to purchase either a home recording equipment, called audio interface, or a separate software that will be connected to the computer, which was not worthwhile price-wise and time-wise.

With a cable that connects your digital piano to your smartphone, the SSR allows you to extract the sound from your musical instrument by simply using the video or audio recorder on your smartphone. It is also possible to play a music or a video in your smartphone through the speakers that are embedded in your digital piano.

This technology was partially applied to the latest digital pianos of HDC Young Chang and Kurzweil, and was intended to be widely used in various models both for beginners and for professional musicians. HDC Young Chang expects that this patented technology will improve the accessibility and usability of digital musical instruments among smartphone users regardless of age, and will encourage them to actively share their contents online through a social network.

HDC Young Chang jumped into the digital business in 1990 with Ray Kurzweil, Young Chang’s technology consultant and Google’s executive who specializes in artificial intelligence. Equipped with various patented technologies, it has been running a digital R&D center in Boston, MA, United States.

“This patented technology will enable users to share their talent more easily not only with their family members but also with people around the world. We will continue to develop new technologies to promote the excellence of Korean culture as well as to bring a better life, living up to the motto of the parent company Hyundai Development Company,” said Yang-gyu Lim, the head of the research institute that focuses on the digital business of HDC Young Chang.
